Malibu Grill is introducing Washingtonians to the exotic tastes and flavors of Brazil's cuisine.
Tailored after the food of the southeast region of Rio de Janeiro, Malibu Grill is a churrascaria, the Portuguese translation for steakhouse. In this region, the cuisine revolves around the churrasco, delicately marinated and grilled meats ranging from lamb and pork to beef and chicken. Most restaurants, serve these meats rodizio style - on skewers in an all-you-can-eat-setting.
In order to recreate this popular Brazilian style of dining, the restaurant provides a tropical setting adorned with palm trees and brightly-painted murals. Guests are offered selection of 10 daily grilled meats served up tableside by Brazilian-style "Gauchos". In addition to the vast array of meats, guests also enjoy the grill's extensive salad bar with 16 freshly-prepared cold salads and 11 hot dishes.
Brief History:
In the early 1800's, European immigrants settled in the Rio Grande do Sul area of Brazil. They were strong and skillful people who treasured and nurtured the land and quickly became adept at raising and herding cattle. They became known as Gauchos (local ranchers).
A unique type of cooking, called churrasco (shoo-rhas'co) was inspired by these ranchers. They would gather together and start a wood burning fire, once the fire turned into golden embers, large portions of prime meat were skewered and slowly cooked to perfection. Using conventional knives, which they wore on their belts, they sliced thin and succulent pieces of meat in succession onto each person's plate.
How it works:
The main course, the highlight of the meal, will start when you flip your wooden indicator from the red side to the green side, signaling the meat gaucho that you’re ready to be served.
The cuts of beef may be unfamiliar to many as they are precisely cut to perfection by a Brazilian butcher that assures that every skewer will only bare prime meat.
The meat cutters are trained to cut the meat so that it stay succulent and tender. One by one they parade around at your table, skewer in hand, with a variety of meats.
It's an amazing parade of delectable meats, not to mention a great performance that goes on until you surrender and turn the wooden indicator back to red. To see how it works, click here
Then it will be time for dessert...
